Glossary of betting terms - introduction

This glossary of betting terms is offered in conjunction with our online betting guide and betting odds guide to help explain some popular terms used by online bookmakers and betting sites that offer services to customers in the UK.

If you're consulting this glossary in anticipation of placing any bets online, please be sure to check the betting glossary, rules, terms and conditions, help resouces or other reference sources as may be provided online by the bookmaker with which you intend to place your bets. The definitions below are offered in good faith, but their interpretation and meaning may differ between bookmakers.

Betting terms glossary:

Accumulator - a bet that involves two or more selections, with returns generated from each selection being reinvested into the following selection until the bet finishes.

Alphabet - 26 bets involving six selections in different events and comprising of one six-fold, one Yankee and two Patents. Any one or more winning selections up to and including all six generates a return. Bonuses may apply subject to conditions.

Ante-post betting - prices offered on major events in advance of the day of the event, with bets normally accepted by bookmakers on the understanding that if the selection does not participate, the bet will be deemed to have lost.

Bar price - runners in event that are quoted without a price / odds during early betting shows by SIS (Satellite Information Services, a sports coverage and data services provider).

Block - a bet providing full cover involving nine, ten, eleven or twelve selections and comprising of all possible doubles, trebles and upwards bets. Any two or more winning selections up to and including all nine, ten, eleven or twelve generates a return.

Board prices - odds relayed from racecourses during pre-race betting; may be made available to and accepted by online betting customers.

Co-favourite - one of three or more selections that share the same shortest odds for an event.

Combination forecast (CFC) - a forecast bet involving three selections in the same race and requiring any two to be the first and second placed finishers in any order to generate a return.

Combination Superfecta - a pool-based bet involving four selections from the same race. They must finish first, second, third and fourth in any order to generate a return. A selection becoming a non-runner voids the bet.

Combination forecast doubles and trebles - combination forecast bets (spanning two races for doubles or three races for for trebles) with returns reinvested on successive selections and requiring each combination forecast to succeed in order to generate a return.

Combination tricast - a forecast bet involving three or more selections in the same race and requiring any three to be the first, second and third placed finishers in any order to generate a return.

Combination Trifecta - a pool-based bet involving three selections from the same race. They must finish first, second and third in any order to generate a return. A selection becoming a non-runner voids the bet.

Computer straight forecast (CSF) - dividends paid to customers who forecast first and second place finishers in the correct order for a horse or greyhound race; declared to a £1 unit.

Double - one bet involving two selections in different events. Returns from a successful first selection are reinvested into the second. Both must succeed for the bet to win. Also called: 2 play parlay, round robin.

Double action - an if bet that is processed when the preceding bet has won, tied or cancelled.

Each-way - a selection backed to win or to be placed in one of a number of qualifying runner-up positions (such positions qualifying for reducing levels of return and being limited in number on a race-specific basis).

Early prices - odds that may be offered on the day of the race in advance of racecourse betting.

Evens - odds whereby any winnings would be equal to the sum of money staked.

Exacta - a pool-based bet involving two selections in the same race that must finish first and second in the correct order to generate a return.

Favourite - the selection with the shortest price / odds.

First show - the initial list of prices / odds for an event.

Forecast betting - bets on predictions for first and second place finishers in greyhound or horse racing, with dividends declared after races quoted to a £1 stake and based on starting prices.

Full cover - the total possible combination of doubles, trebles and other potential accumulator bets for any given number of selections.

Goliath - 247 bets involving eight selections in different events and comprising of one eight-fold, eight seven-folds, twenty-eight six-folds, fifty-six five-folds, seventy four-folds, fifty-six trebles and twenty-eight doubles. Any two or more winning selections up to and including all eight generates a return.

Grand salami - the overall total number of goals scored in all hockey games on a given day; bets can be placed to go under or over.

Handicap - races involving competitors that will start on unequal terms (eg with some greyhounds having extra distance to run or some horses carrying added weights).

Heinz - 57 bets involving six selections in different events and comprising of one six-fold, six five-folds, fifteen four-folds, twenty trebles and fifteen doubles. Any two or more winning selections generates a return.

If bet - 1 bet involving from two to twelve straight play selections joined by a condition being either single action (the second and subsequent bets proceed only if the prededing one wins) or double action (the second and subsequent bets proceed only if the preceding one wins, draws or is cancelled). Any loss stops the chain of straight play selections.

If lose - a condition that can be attached to a bet such that the placing of subsequent wagers depends on whether the preceding selection loses.

LInes - another term for odds.

Lucky 15 - 15 bets involving four selections in different events and comprising of one four-fold, four trebles, six doubles and four singles. Any single or any two, three or all four winning selections generates a return. Bonuses may apply subject to conditions.

Lucky 31 - 31 bets involving five selections in different events and comprising of one five-fold, five four-folds, ten trebles, ten doubles and five singles. Any one up to and including all five winning selections generates a return. Bonuses may apply subject to conditions.

Lucky 63 - 63 bets involving six selections in different events and comprising of one six-fold, six five-folds, fifteen four-folds, twenty trebles, fifteen doubles and six singles. Any one up to and including all six winning selections generates a return. Bonuses may apply subject to conditions.

Not to Win (Lay bet) - placing a bet on a horse to not win the race in which it's running.

Odds against - a price where potential winnings are greater than the value of the stake; the odds are greater than evens.

Odds on - a price where potential winnings are lesser than the value of the stake; the odds are lesser than evens.

Pari-mutuel - Pari-mutuel returns are determined by the French totalisator and are often paid by UK bookmakers on major events that take place in France.

Patent - seven bets involving three selections in different events and comprising of one treble, three doubles and three single bets. Any single winning selection generates a return. Any two winning selections generates returns from one double and two singles. Three winning selections generates returns from all seven bets.

Permed Patent - up to 28 bets involving between four and six selections and comprising of singles, doubles and trebles to reflect all possible combinations of three different selections.

Permed Yankee - up to 55 bets comprising of five individual Yankee bets. Involves five or sex selections in different events and comprises of all possible combinations of four different selections (spread across doubles, trebles and four-fold bets).

Permutations / perms - commonly used in football betting to mean "any" (eg perm two from four would mean doubles involving four selections).

Quinella - a single pool-based bet involving two selections from the same race. They must finish first or second in either order to win the bet. If one selection becomes a non-runner, the bet becomes void.

Returns - the amount collected by a winning customer. Returns include the return of the original stake, so should not be confused with winnings (which would consist of returns minus stakes).

Reverse If bet - 2 bets involving from two to twelve straight play selections running both up and down the betting slip joined by a condition being either single action (the second and subsequent bets proceed only if the prededing one wins) or double action (the second and subsequent bets proceed only if the preceding one wins, draws or is cancelled). Any loss in either direction stops the chain of straight play selections.

Reversed Exacta - 2 bets involving two selections in the same race that must finish first and second in either order to generate a return. A non-runner voids the bet.

Reversed forecast (RFC) - a forecast bet involving two selections in the same race and requiring the prediction of the first and second placed finishers in either order.

Reversed forecast double - 4 bets involving two reversed forecast bets across two races. Returns from the first forecast are reinvested into the second. Any combination of two winning bets (from four possibilities) spanning both races generates a return.

Reversed forecast treble - 8 bets involving three reversed forecast bets across three races. Returns from the first forecast are reinvested into the second and ditto into the third. Any combination of three winning bets (from 8 possibilities) spanning all three races generates a return.

Scoop6 - bet involving selections from all six Saturday Scoop6 races as nominated by the Tote; single line and permutations entries with minimum stakes of £2 are accepted, with dividends paid on bets containing all six winning horses from a win fund and winning customers gaining eligibility to register and play for the following Saturday's bonus fund. Dividends from a place fund are paid on bets containing six placed finishers.

Selection(s) - the customer's predicted choice of winner for any particular bet (eg horse, football team, golfer, greyhound, etc).

Showcast - a fixed price forecast or tricast bet based on early prices or a racecourse show. Usually available on UK and Irish horse races and greyhound races.

Single / straight - a single bet on one selection, which must be successful to win the bet.

Stake - the sum of money that a customer chooses to wager on a given selection.

Stake unit - a minimum stake value that may be required for a particular type of speciality bet.

Starting prices (SP) - odds at which a wager will be settled, unless otherwise agreed in advance.

Stewards enquiry - investigation that may be carried out by stewards into infringements of rules that may have occured during a particular race.

Straight forecast (SFC) - a forecast bet involving two selections in the same race and requiring the prediction of the first and second placed finishers in the correct order.

Straight forecast double - a single forecast bet similar to a double, involving two straight forecast bets across two races. Returns from the first forecast are reinvested into the second. Both forecasts must succeed to generate a return.

Straight forecast Patent - 7 bets similar to a Patent, involving three straight forecast bets across three races and comprising of one treble, three doubles and three single bets with any one or more winning forecasts up to and including all three generating a return.

Straight forecast treble - a single forecast bet similar to a treble, involving three straight forecast bets across three races. Returns from the first forecast are reinvested into the second and ditto into the third. All three forecasts must succeed to generate a return.

Straight forecast Yankee - 11 bets similar to a Yankee, involving four straight forecast bets across four races and comprising of one four-fold, four trebles and six double bets with any two or more winning forecasts up to and including all four generating a return.

Straight tricasts (STC) - 1 bet involving three selections in the same race requiring predictions for first, second and third place finishers in the correct order to generate a return.

Super Heinz - 120 bets involving seven selections in different events and comprising of one seven-fold, seven six-folds, twenty-one five-folds, thirty-five four-folds, thirty-five trebles and twenty-one doubles. Any two or more winning selections up to and including all seven generates a return.

Super Yankee - 26 bets involving five selections in different events and comprising of one five-fold, five four-folds, ten trebles and ten doubles. Any two winning selections or more generates a return.

Superfecta - a pool-based bet involving four selections from the same race. They must finish first, second, third and fourth in the predicted order to generate a return. A selection becoming a non-runner voids the bet.

Teaser - 1 bet involving two or more point spread or game total selections on basketball and football. Fixed numbers of points are bought or sold on all selections within the Teaser, with payout odds fixed based on the number of points bought or sold and the number of teams. All selections must be successful to generate a return.

Tote - a pool-based betting method that may apply to events instead of starting price.

Totesuper7 - subject to a minimum stake of £2, involves selecting winners from seven nominated races, with returns generated for successfully predicting five, six or seven winners.

Toteswinger - bet accepted in races of six or more runners that are nominated by Tote direct; involves making two selections in a horse race to finish in either first, second or third place.

Treble - one bet involving three selections in different events. Returns from a successful first selection are reinvested into the second, ditto the third. All three must succeed for a win. Also called: three play parlay.Similar principles apply to four-fold, five-fold, etc up to and including fourteen-fold.

Tricast betting - bets on predictions for first, second and third place finishers in greyhound or horse racing, with dividends declared after races quoted to a £1 stake and based on starting prices. Only available on handicap horse races with eight or more runners and on featured greyhound racing meetings.

Trifecta - a pool-based bet involving three selections from the same race. They must finish first, second and third in the predicted order to generate a return. A selection becoming a non-runner voids the bet.

Trixie - four bets involving three selections in different events and comprising of one treble and three doubles. At least two winning selections generates a return. Three winning selections generates returns from all four bets.

Union Jack - involving nine selections in different events and comprising of eight groups of three selections generated by taking placing the nine selections sequentially into a 3 x 3 grid and then taking three horizontal, three vertical and two diagonal lines to form the groups. Groups may be staked as Patents, Trixies or trebles. Union Jack Patents contain 56 bets, Union Jack Trixies contain 56 bets and Union Jack trebles contain 8 bets, each involving nine selections. Bonuses may apply subject to conditions.

Winnings - the amount of money collected by a customer after deducting their original associated stake.

Yankee - eleven bets involving four selections in different events and comprising of one four-fold, four trebles and six doubles, with any two or three winning selections generating a return. Four winning selections generates returns from all eleven bets.
